Rodeo de Indios/AIRCA transcends race in helping raise funds for the Hispano/Native American Scholarship

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Graced by the presence of one of New Mexico's top Indian leaders, the Rodeo de Indios banquet netted $600 toward the Native American Scholarship Fund Raising banquet held at the Nativo in Albuquerque on Friday evening, April 26, 2013. New Mexico State Department of Indian Affairs, Cabinet Secretary Arthur Allison, in his keynote address, acknowledged "the rodeo industry as not only a form of entertainment but a way of life for the participants that needs to be preserved." With a degree in Agri-Economics, Allison said "most ranchers including our Navajo sheepherders create value from grass, because the animals eat the grass off of the rangelands. We do need to redevelop our rangelands."

Event organizer Flavian Tabaha, who also chairs the Rodeo de Indios (performances at 1pm and 7pm on April 27 and 12 noon on April 28 at the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Posse Arena) and is the event director for the AIRCA rough stocks events, in his welcome address emphasized "the importance of working with all people, regardless of religion, race, or other differences to make contribution to communities where we live and work." In that spirit, Tabaha launched the 2013 Silent Auction in concert with The Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce and local Native Artisans' support at the banquet.

"We raised $91,000 for scholarships last year meaning 91 students received $1,000 scholarship each toward a career of their choice" said Mary Ann Jones of The Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce in her closing remark. Jones said "thank you" to the Navajo Nation with whom the AHCC works in conference planning and set up in the Albuquerque area while adding value to the community by providing nearly 100 events and special activities with opportunities to network and gain valuable knowledge. Potential collaborative opportunities were lined up with key organizational CEOs such as Lester Secatero, National Indian Health Board leader and other leaders that were present. Albuquerque Area Indian Health Board leader Beverly Coho who successfully bided on a painting by the renowned artist Jim Abeita for the scholarship raising also plans to connect various organizations she is involved with with AHCC, among them, ANCCSB, Inc.

AIRCA Vice President Casey Begay provided a sincere blessing to open the event and blessings for the scrumptious meal while also MCing the wonderful event. Begay was selected to represent AIRCA at the AHCC Education Excellence Awards Banquet on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Albuquerque that normally sells out with about 700 in attendance.
